Velox Plus

Velox Plus

Velox Plus is an antifouling paint developed specifically to protect propellers, stern drives, shafts, outdrives, struts, jet pumps and other metallic parts immersed in the water. A unique feature of Velox Plus is that it is not degraded by galvanic currents that are typically responsible for paint detachment. Using Velox Plus will keep your propeller clean, thus increasing fuel economy and boosting vessel performance. Save money and time by extending the periods between haulouts to clean your propeller and other metallic parts. This kit can be used on any size boat, from small yachts to large commercial vessels. Velox Plus can be applied with a brush or sprayed on.

Saves You Money

Increases the time between haul outs with Velox Plus, thus saving you money! Velox Plus also has a 2 year pot life, allowing you to save any remaining paint for use at a later time. Increase your fuel economy by preventing marine growth on your propellers, drives and submerged metal to reduce drag. Approximately 60% cost savings compared to "non-stick" or "release" coatings. It's repairable and repaintable! No need to start over each time bare metals become exposed.

Velox Plus works because of the excellent adhesion to metal below the water line. If Velox is scratched or damaged it will not all peel off, unlike "release" coatings. Not degraded by galvanic currents. Galvanic and electrolytic corrosion are the most common cause of paint failure on metal below the water line.

Easy To Apply

Velox Plus can be brushed, rolled or spray on. No need to rush because Velox Plus does not need a catalyst, allowing for a quality application. Single part primer + single part paint = no rush and no waste. Remaining product can be used during next haul out. There's no maximum time between coats, allowing you to budget your time as needed. Also, no maximum time before launching, allowing you to have a completely flexible application schedule.

Here are common questions we receive about our Velox Plus antifouling paint. If you can't find an answer to your question here please feel free to contact us.

Velox Plus can be applied by a skilled and competent do-it-yourselfer, or a skilled and competent professional. The success of the product relies heavily on a proper application. Please make certain that you read, understand, and follow the application instructions.

Improper sanding before application is the biggest cause of product failure. It is very important that the surface of your propeller or running gear is sanded aggressively with 80 grit sandpaper before applying the primer. We highly recommend using a power sander for the preparation of the metal surface. PYI cannot warrant or guarantee the workmanship performed by any person or firm installing its products, so please be certain that whoever is applying Velox Plus has read and is following the instructions. You should be able to feel the abraded surface when you run your fingernail across the surface. Below are some examples of improperly and properly sanded finishes.

Yes. Velox Plus adheres to stainless steel well. It is important that you immediately and properly apply the Velox Primer after sanding your stainless steel propeller or running gear because stainless steel has the tendency accumulate chromium oxide if not immediately primed after sanding.

Yes. However, aluminum must be protected with an appropriate epoxy coating before the metal primer is applied. This is not necessary when aluminum is already protected with a factory finish (such as new stern drives). For epoxy factory finishes, sand the surface with an abrasive pad (like Scotch-Brite) or fine sandpaper (180-220 grit), removing all gloss or shine before applying Metal Primer.

Please be sure that you read, understand and follow the instructions for applying Velox Plus to your propeller or running gear. The instructions can be found here. Recoat times and the time before launch can be found on page 1. Dry times between coats can vary immensely depending on the weather and the surface temperature of the equipment being painted.

As with any paint, we can only give you an estimate on how much coverage you will get out of Velox Plus. Many variables come into play, like the style of brush used, the thickness of the coats, the weather, the elevation, etc. come into play. With that said, here are some coverage estimates:

  • Normal coverage is approximately 8 square meters (86sq.ft) per liter.
  • Flat surfaces, trim tab and rudder coverage is approximately 10 square meters (107sq.ft) per liter.
  • Propeller or stern drive coverage is approximately 5 square meters (53sq.ft) per liter.
  • Primer and Velox Plus Paint are available in .25 liter, and .50 liter cans.
  • One 16” four blade prop will use approximately .125 liter for each coat.
  • One 30” four blade prop will use approximately .25 liter for each coat.
  • One 40” four blade prop will use approximately .50 liter for each coat.

Yes! After cleaning and lightly sanding the surface with fine sandpaper or abrasive pad (like Scotch Brite), you can apply Velox Plus up to two times over the previous season of Velox Plus. We suggest removing all the antifouling paint in any case at least every three years. Do not apply Metal Primer or Velox Plus on any other antifouling.
